While the whole world plans to tune in to watch the Rose Parade on Jan. 2, 2017, and thousands of people plan their trips to our town for the legendary parade, we Pasadenans can already see the grandstands built in place, and pretty much have just six degrees of separation from at least one of the girls in the Royal Court. How on earth did we get this lucky!
In the middle to all the preparations, I recently received a lovely box, just about 7 x 7 in size, containing 16 short-stemmed red roses. They were a present from Ragú, which is about to embark on a first ever – a float on the Rose Parade that will kick off the celebration of the company’s 80th anniversary.
These red roses are just like the ones they will be using on the float, which, by the way, I’m pretty sure will end up making you hungry. Ragú partnered with Paradiso Parade Floats and its designer Charles Meier in the planning of “the reddest float in the parade, to highlight the vine-ripened, California-grown tomatoes that go into every jar of the sauce.” The float will feature 50 oversized tomatoes that will be formed by tens of thousands of red roses and more than 25,000 red carnations. The float will also make use of fresh vegetables, including garlic, zucchini, peppers, and eggplant, and of herbs like basil, fennel, and oregano. And the front of the float will display a giant plate of actually steaming spaghetti, with sauce on it. How hungry does that make you feel already!?
So, this Jan. 2, (by the way, did you notice that the parade won’t happen on Jan. 1 as usual? That’s because of the “never on Sunday” tradition), when you wake up bright and early to run down the street to catch the parade (or simply to turn on your TV set), keep an eye open for the Ragú float, and then think about how amazing it is that a Woodland Hills family has managed to serve spaghetti sauce to our tables for now 80 years.
