Put a Pin on It
There’s a trend going around—one I’m obsessed with. It’s simple yet fun, inexpensive yet stylish. What is it, you ask? Pins. I’m not sure when the trend started, but what I do know is I’m all in. And with the plethora of whimsical designs you’re able to choose from, there’s something out there for everyone.
The pin is almost this generation’s brooch—which began back in the Bronze Age. A decorative piece of jewelry attached to a garment, the brooch was not only decorative but functional, as it was meant to hold clothing items closed. Today, the pin is more of a statement piece—a decorative item fastened on a jacket or vest lapel. (But it could definitely hold a scarf together or a cape closed.)
What I love about this trend specifically is that there are so many unique pins to choose from. Basically—you get to do you. Go classy with simple shapes and metals; go funky with comic book slogans; go intellectual with book covers; or personal with a monogram. Currently, I’m digging a variety of shapes and styles and loving how an outfit’s mood can change based on the pins I’m wearing.

I would LOVE to own a classic Chanel pin—the signature interlocking Cs would look just oh so stylish adorning a coat or even a denim jacket. But as I’m typically on a budget, a vintage pin is second to none. Clothes Heaven, located on Union in Old Pasadena, is the perfect place to find one of these pieces at a fraction of the cost. And? It’s local.
No surprise—Anthropologie has some of my favorite pins. They’re extremely affordable and adorably quirky. For instance—a pink typewriter or a number two pencil? Um, for this writer, yes please! Urban Outfitter too has whimsical pins—from a feelings jar and PB&J to an avocado and a pink cloud, your jean jackets will never be the same again.
For something in-between, Banana Republic has beautiful pins that are reminiscent of your classy grandmothers’ brooches. Mixed jewels and metals create a more sophisticated (yet still fun) look on a long wool coat or vest.
