Vroman’s Bookstore is inviting you to an evening with astronaut Scott Kelly, who is touring with his new book Endurance. If you have ever been curious about what living in space feels like, its highlights and its challenges, this is your chance to hear from a man who spent an entire year outside our planet. The event will be held at the Pasadena Presbyterian Church on Nov. 14, 2017, at 7 pm.

Scott Kelly is a former military fighter pilot and test pilot, an engineer, a retired astronaut, and a retired U.S. Navy captain. As veteran of four space flights, Kelly commanded the International Space Station (ISS) on three expeditions and was a member of a yearlong mission to the ISS. During the Year in Space mission, he set records for the total accumulated number of days spent in space and for the single longest space mission by an American astronaut.

In Endurance he takes his readers inside a world completely hostile to human life. He describes navigating the extreme challenge of long-term spaceflight, both life-threatening and mundane: the devastating effects on the body; the isolation from his loved ones and from the comforts of Earth; the catastrophic risks of colliding with space junk; and the still more haunting threat of being unable to help should tragedy strike at home. This last agonizing situation he faced when, on a previous mission, his twin brother’s wife, American Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, was shot while he still had two months in space.
