I’m highlighting two different organizations you can donate your gently used clothes to this holiday season—one non-profit and one for-profit—to help those in need today!
Ever wonder how donating your clothes could empower other women to succeed? Dress For Success helps you do just that. Since 1997, Dress For Success has helped women achieve self sufficiency through “a network of support, professional attire and the development tools… women need to thrive in work and in life” (www.https://dressforsuccess.org).
And it all began in a church basement. When founder Nancy Lublin decided to turn her $5,000 inheritance into a gift that would keep on giving, she teamed up with three nuns to fill a need not being met—helping women overcome poverty through education, attire, and employment.
Today, the organization is stationed in over 30 countries and has helped over one million women take steps towards self-sufficiency. A big part of that? Is acquiring “nearly new, contemporary, seasonal career appropriate apparel, accessories, handbags, shoes and jewelry” from people like you.

This for-profit, global thrift retailer “helps more than 100 nonprofit organizations by purchasing donated goods from them, which provides a source of revenue [that] help[s] support their vital community programs and services” (www.savers.com).
In other words:
- People like you donate your used clothing and other goods to local nonprofits.
- Savers purchases those donated items from those local nonprofits.
- Savers then prices the purchased items and sells them at one of its retailers, offering families quality items at great discounts.
- Items unsold are recycled or sold to developing countries.
