Tucked away from the bustle of downtown Old Pasadena lies Old Focals, a spectacle shop worth spectating. Because not only does this quirky store stock a plethora of vintage frames, but its owner, Russ Campbell, is a focal genius. For over 30 years, Campbell has purveyed the industry with fashionable vintage eye-wear. In fact, countless celebrities owe their spectacle fashion to him. (Gary Oldman, for one. The cast of Mad Men, as well.)
So, why not visit his store on Green Street in Pasadena?
Upon entrance, Old Focals looks like an old costumer’s prop house — meaning, frames are everywhere. On shelves. On racks. On tables. Behind glass. And all kinds too. Whimsical and funky frames. Contemporary and vintage ones. Frames for men. Frames for women. No matter your style, Old Focals is bound to have ‘em. Their stock includes everything from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. However, unlike other vintage stores, where items have been previously owned, Campbell specializes in NOS–New Old Stock: vintage items that have never been worn. Prices are budget friendly too, ranging from $129 to $169. (Though, these prices include frames only.)
Campbell also launched his own line of high design eye-wear at affordable prices–like the JFK inspired “Advocate” frame or the Superman inspired “Boss” frame, each for just $129.
But more than the tangible coolness of Campbell’s frames is his passion behind it all–according to their website, “For Russ it’s a matter [in] matchmaking–calling out the perfect pair of specs for a character, customer in less than a minute–an intuitive moment not to be missed.”
