Muse/Ique, the Pasadena-based non-profit orchestra self-described as “counter-conventional,” began its 2013/14 Uncorked Series this Monday true to that description – in the midst of (partly built) parade floats at the Rose Palace.

The Pasadena Rose Palace, which has stood at the same location on South Raymond Avenue since 1964, is a large yet simple building that is used primarily for the construction of floats for the Tournament of Roses Parade. On Monday, however, it became an elegantly eclectic concert venue, complete with lights, sound system, stage, tables, chairs, bleachers, and a cocktail area, that hosted “Self-Titled,” the first concert of the Muse/Ique’s Uncorked Series, dedicated to The Beatles’ ninth official album, popularly known as “The White Album.”

With a diverse group of musicians that included the violinists of Muse/Ique, the members of the Charlie Greene Band, the DkF Vocal Ensemble, pianist Bryan Pezzone, and Glee’s cast member Kevin McHale, parts of the “White Album” were explained and performed in front of an audience that remained enthralled.
Many in attendance were employees of Brighton Collectibles, the evening’s sponsor, who were in town from different parts of the country for business purposes but were treated by their boss to a fine evening of music, wine, and food. Now… that’s a boss to have!

And, (this is not a commercial but deserves mentioning) the event was catered by another Pasadena outfit that knocked everyone’s socks off – The Kitchen catering service (www.thekitchen.net), which impressed the crowd with gourmet sandwiches, soups, appetizers, all delicious and looking fabulous.

Not much more could have been asked from this splendid Muse/Ique’s Uncorked Series opening night. And it certainly became a motivation to attend the upcoming events, beginning with “Girl/Band,” which will be held at the Avon Distribution Center (2940 E. Foothill Blvd. in Pasadena) on November 11.

“Girl/Band” will see the screening of the acclaimed film festival favorite “The Girls in the Band” followed by a group of female jazz players performing live. Individual tickets for “Girl/Band” are $50 and can be purchased at www.muse-ique.org or by calling (626) 539-7085.
