Buying summer clothes with fall in mind.

I’m always dreaming of fall. It could be winter and I’d still be dreaming of fall. It’s safe to say, fall is my favorite season. And while Southern California barely offers me a true autumn, I enjoy it nonetheless. The shorter days; the moody weather; the pumpkin everything. But mostly? The clothes. I adore the clothes.

But what’s a girl to do mid summer? Not shop? (That’s a definite solution, of course. I stand by and applaud anyone who shops less.) For those of us where fashion is our hobby, I’ve found this one tip to be helpful: purchase items with seasonal stamina.

In other words, if you’re going to shop, make it count. Now, I’m not saying never buy summer staples. Everyone needs denim shorts, everyday sandals, lightweight tanks, etc. However, come the end of July, I begin to shift my attention on pieces that’ll transition into fall.

This comes out in the colors I choose, the materials item comes in, and the layer-ability it possesses. Ready to shop my tip? Here’s how in three easy ways:

  1. Start shifting your color choices from bright summer colors to more moody fall ones. Instead of grabbing that tank in bubble-gum pink, grab it in olive green. Instead of grabbing the butter yellow tee, grab the mustard hued one. With this one idea in mind, you’ll notice your summer wardrobe easily transitioning into fall.
  1. This same principle applies to materials. We all love a great eyelet blouse or thin cotton tee during the summer. They’re lightweight for a reason. However, come fall, these breezy tops struggle to find a place in our wardrobe. (Though, my third tip will help.) Already retailers are releasing sweater tees, thicker cottoned skirts, and leather booties. All are easily wearable during the summer. A sweater tee and shorts is a perfect evening-in-the-park outfit. A tissue tank with a thick cottoned skirt is just right for a beach day. And leather booties with an easy teeshirt dress is a date-night no brainer. But. These pieces will transition into fall like your favorite pair of denim. Swap shorts for joggers; a tank for a slouchy sweater; and a teeshirt dress for a wool one.
  1. Which brings me to my third tip—layer-ability. If you find that you just can’t stop shopping summer pieces, fine! Ask yourself this: will it layer well? Will that off-the-shoulder top work under a leather jacket? Will the linen button-down work under my sweaters? Will the cutoffs work with my over-the-knee boots? If the answer is yes, buy, buy, buy.
