Hidden Talents in Pasadena: Creativity, Community, and a Dentist-Turned-Glass-Artist.
One of the quiet joys of living in Greater Pasadena is discovering the hidden talents tucked into the lives of our neighbors. Sometimes it’s the banker who moonlights as a jazz pianist. Sometimes it’s the attorney who throws clay on weekends. And sometimes — as we learned this week — it’s your dentist who has been secretly transforming her garage into a glass-fusing studio worthy of an arts district loft. It’s one of those Hidden Talents in Pasadena that reminds us how much creativity lives quietly behind closed doors.
Today, we’re excited to celebrate a spark of creativity from someone many of you know well: Dr. Beatrice Haddad of Pasadena Dentistry.
Beatrice has been a trusted dental professional in our community for years — precise, attentive, and beloved by her patients. But outside work? She’s been living an entirely different life… one filled with color, fire, kilns, and what she affectionately calls “prototypes,” though her friends might describe them as “beautiful glass pieces she refuses to part with.”
Her story captures something essential about our city: the way artistry weaves quietly through everyday life. Pasadena has been home to makers since the early 1900s — a place where garden sheds became studios, bungalows hid writer’s dens, and garages became small-scale workshops long before Instagram made “maker culture” fashionable.
This week, Beatrice let us peek into her artistic world, and we’re thrilled to share her note. Stories like this highlight just how many Hidden Talents in Pasadena are waiting to be discovered.
A Note From Beatrice Haddad.
“Hello!!!
I had to share my latest little obsession… I mean creation. For the last two years I’ve basically been living in my garage fusing glass like a mad scientist. And today I’ve decided: I am officially a glass artist. 🎉🔥
I felt compelled to share this with you, since most of you know me only as your dentist. I truly love working with teeth, but I’ll admit — I could happily give up the business side of dentistry any day!
The best thing about my glass hobby? There’s absolutely no business part. I can’t sell anything because I fall in love with every single piece. My whole house is overflowing with what I politely call ‘prototypes’… which is really just a fancy word for my glass hoarding problem. 🤷♀️💁🏼♀️
This weekend my dear patient and friend — who also happens to be the beautiful model on my website (I created that lovely smile about 15 years ago!) — asked me to make cards for her LA Charcuterie shop. So after weeks of fusing, I spent the entire weekend printing and designing Christmas cards like Santa’s overly enthusiastic helper. 🎄✨
Just wanted to share a little joy and chaos from my glass world. 💕”
Why This Story Resonates.
Beatrice’s message is more than a charming glimpse into a creative hobby. It’s a reminder of something deeply human — and deeply Pasadena:
1. Creativity thrives in unlikely places.
Pasadena’s history is steeped in artistic expression. From Greene & Greene’s Arts and Crafts roots to the backyard studios sprinkled through Bungalow Heaven, creativity has always lived side-by-side with everyday life.
2. Hidden talents in Pasadena are everywhere.
We hear about them all the time — people with artistic passions that never make it to a gallery wall or a retail shop, but enrich their lives (and ours) profoundly.
3. Art doesn’t need to be monetized to be meaningful.
Beatrice’s refusal to sell her glass pieces is part of the charm. Sometimes creating without pressure is the purest form of living well.
4. Passion projects help us stay grounded.
Whether you garden, paint, bake, write, sculpt, or—yes—fuse glass in your garage, the joy is in the process.
