🏛️ Discover the Past at Heritage Square Museum on Your Highland Park Heritage Tour.
Looking for a weekend outing that combines culture, history, architecture, and a touch of whimsy? Just a short drive from Greater Pasadena, the Heritage Square Museum in Highland Park offers a window into Victorian-era Los Angeles. Open Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 5pm, this outdoor museum is more than a collection of old buildings — it’s a lovingly curated preservation of late 19th- and early 20th-century Southern California homes, churches, and storefronts.
As you walk through the museum’s landscaped grounds, you’ll encounter restored buildings like the Hale House (a marvel of Queen Anne architecture) and the Palms Depot, once a bustling train station.
Costumed interpreters sometimes make appearances, offering guided tours and tidbits of domestic life from bygone days. It’s educational, photogenic, and surprisingly serene.

🌍 Highland Park’s Creative Comeback.
A few decades ago, Highland Park was in decline, its charm hidden beneath years of disinvestment. Today, it’s one of Los Angeles’ most dynamic neighborhoods, thanks to a surge in community-based development and historical restoration. Along Figueroa and York, you’ll find a mix of new boutiques, galleries, and eateries housed in vintage storefronts that have been lovingly revived.
The neighborhood balances a deep respect for its past with a forward-thinking energy. Victorian homes line its side streets, many of them beautifully restored. Artists and musicians have long called Highland Park home, and their influence is still felt in the area’s cultural events and vibrant public murals.
A visit to Heritage Square feels even more relevant when seen in the context of Highland Park’s broader renaissance. It’s a rare case where the history lesson continues beyond the museum gates.
If you’re walking, begin near Figueroa Street and Avenue 56, then stroll north toward York Boulevard. This stretch is home to some of the best examples of the neighborhood’s revival — indie bookshops, cafes, vintage clothing stores, and restored architecture. For those driving, consider parking near York Park and exploring both major corridors. You’ll get a good sense of the old and new that defines Highland Park today.
