Old Pasadena and The Civic Center make up the downtown core of Pasadena. Old Pasadena is the first downtown. It has made a significant comeback after a period of decline and is one of the most popular shopping and entertainment destinations in Southern California. It features a major shopping venue, upscale restaurants, a movie theater, nightclubs, shops, outdoor cafes, pubs and an increasing number of residential condos and townhouses.
The Norton Simon museum is nearby; Pacific Oaks Eureka campus is in Old Pasadena’s north end and The Rose Parade marches through Old Pasadena on Colorado Boulevard on New Year’s Day. Old Pasadena is designated as a Historic District, on the National Register of Historic Places, as is The Civic Center.
The Beaux Arts buildings in the Civic Center District are Pasadena City Hall, the public library, civic auditorium, YMCA and YWCA, Southern California Gas Company (now the Hale Center) and the US Post Office. There are apartments for lease atop Paseo Colorado and condominiums for sale in the area.
