For Southern California, it’s been cold these past few weeks. We’re talking consistent sixties with dips in the fifties and forties, which, if you’re anything like me, gives me all the winter feels. I love cold. Well, I love SoCal cold. It means cozy blankets, warm drinks, and? All. The. Coats.
Some winters, I barely wear one, making me wonder why I purchase anything more than a light weight jacket. But this winter, I’ve enjoyed the added warmth and have taken full advantage of topping off my outfits with a coat. The way to do it in Southern California? Light layers. Instead of a bulky sweater, pair a silk blouse or tissue tee with your favorite topcoat. It’ll not only keep you warm, but will also allow you to shed your heaviest item once you arrive at your destination.
If you’re hesitant about dropping hundreds of dollars on a wool or cashmere coat, now is the time. Sales are everywhere. Ready to shop? I’ve paired my favorites with light layers to make rocking a coat this winter easy and fun.
J.Crew is my go-to for coats. They’re always classy, always well made, and (almost) always on sale in the winter, which makes purchasing a coat in SoCal justifiable. This Universal Standard for J.Crew top coat is no exception—it’s double breasted, falls past the knee, and oozes sophistication. I also adore this pink faux fur coat that’s as cozy as a hug. Pair either with this feminine ruffle-neck popover blouse for a lightweight layer.
Zara is my spot for on-trend and well priced coats. For me, I tend to splurge on classic coats and shop with a budget for more trendy pieces. Zara makes this possible—like this plaid coat (hello, menswear!) or this leopard print one. Pair either of these with this lightweight tweed top with fringe.
Kate Spade is always a splurge when it comes to coats. There’s no denying it. But? If you’re looking for a smashing piece that will make a statement, this is your spot. Like this fluffy wool faux fur trim coat in yellow or this houndstooth wool coat with faux fur collar. Pair either of these with a classic and lightweight crewneck sweater.
