If you still haven’t been to Union, then there’s no better time to try one of LA’s favorite Italian restaurants than this summer. The restaurant with numerous accolades is kicking off summer with a wine dinner that is sure to be one of the best culinary events in town.
Coming up on June 17, Union Chef/Co-Owner Bruce Kalman and Partner Marie Petulla are hosting Jeff Fischer and Habit Wines. For the dinner, guests are treated to a 5-course dinner created by Chef Kalman and Chef de Cuisine, Sasha Grumman with each course paired with a Habit Wine. Reservations are needed in advance and more details can be found on the restaurant’s blog. Habit Wine has been available at Union since the restaurant first opened in 2014 to wild renown (including praise from legendary chef Jacques Torres) but this marks the first collaborative effort between the teams. There is only a single seating available for the occasion, at 6:30 p.m. with tickets available at $125 per person. You can make reservations via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. The Habit Wine Dinner menu features many of the hallmarks of the Northern Italian cuisine that Kalman has popularized with a lighter touch than heavy pastas but with a nod toward seasonal summery tastes.
The five-course meal includes wine pairings for each course as well as a passed course featuring rosé paired with a gourmet take on ricotta toast, followed by locally sourced produce and seafood courses. The main course is lamb, which is a summertime favorite on the grill but gets an Italian take here when paired with an eggplant side. The dinner finishes up on a sweet note with black tea panna cotta.
Union is a rustic Northern-Italian restaurant but uses locally sourced ingredients to bring a California touch to the constantly changing menu. Habit Wine hails from Los Olivos, in Santa Barbara County. The relatively new wine company recognizes the importance of pairing good wine with good food and so has a wide selection of wine pairing dinner events, it’s just lucky that this one lands so close to home.
