I am a jeans adorer. Most days, you’ll find me in skinny jeans, a tee, and sandals because jeans are both classic and chic—and go with everything. Typically, skinny jeans are my go to. I have ‘em in all different washes and in various distress levels. Ripped knees; ripped knees and thighs; no rips; distressed hem. You name it, I probably have it. (Also. I’d be a very rich woman by now if I had a dollar for every time I heard “You paid for jeans that way?” Yes. Yes, I did.)
This season, I started noticing straight leg jeans making a come back. Denim is one of those items that can instantly change a look and an easy way to add a trend to your wardrobe. I did the embroidered jeans last fall and loved the variety it added; so when I saw this pair of straight leg jeans from Madewell, I snatched them up.
What I then discovered is straight leg jeans and skinny jeans make for different looks. Meaning, my go-to outfits needed to be tweaked slightly. This is typical for wearing any new trend, so I did what I normally do—have a try-on session with my own wardrobe until I found the perfect combination for my new straight leg jeans.
Here’s what I came up with.
Tops. Since straight leg jeans don’t hug your leg like a skinny jean, a more fitted/defined top compliments the line of these jeans best. I’ve been tucking tops in; tying them in a knot; or wearing my more cropped and boxy tops to help keep things from looking too frumpy.
- Love this trimmed pocket tee from Anthropologie. A tiny bit boxy; just enough cropped. And in the prettiest shade of lilac.
- This sweater tank from J.Crew too would pair nicely with straight leg jeans. Fitted with some warmth and in a variety of summer colors.
Shoes. I’m digging gladiator sandals with these. The room in the leg allows for a bit more lacing-up around the ankle, giving a normally casual jean a dressy flair. Sneakers too make straight leg jeans look cool and relaxed.
- Who doesn’t love a blush gold gladiator sandal?
- These paint splatter Tretorn shoes in blue are adorable and on my wish list for sure.
Sweaters. A cozy knit tucked into the top of straight leg jeans is my new spring/summer nights go-to. Love the laid-back look it gives while still maintaining a sleek line.
- This modern tie-front sweater from Madewell has done the work of knotting your sweater for you.
- Adore this neutral pom-pom pullover—whimsical with a classic fit. Tucked in or left out; either way, it’ll pair perfectly with a straight leg jean.
