Let’s get personal for a moment. I lost my Dad last September and am feeling all sorts of things as Father’s Day is arriving. Holidays, I’m realizing, carry so much weight. It’s something I’ve taken for granted all my life. I’ve been blessed with a loving family and parents who were married for (almost) 40 years. When my Dad finally lost his battle to Pancreatic Cancer and stepped into heaven, life changed forever. Every holiday following has looked and will look vastly different than before.
Enter this year’s Father’s Day. While this post will include ways to celebrate your Dad with fun gift ideas, I wanted to share a different way to celebrate too. To celebrate the lives of those we’ve lost.
Encouragement was one of the “tools” my Dad used in his daily life. Words are powerful—they lift us up; they create community; they remind us we’re not alone. Words can calm hearts and ease pains. I’m learning just how powerful words can be through this journey of grief.
If you know someone who has lost a parent or is estranged from one, take this Father’s Day to send them a message. Shoot them a text. Give them a call. Let them know you’re thinking about them. It’s something I wished I had done sooner with friends who have lost a parent. So, as you celebrate the Dad in your life with something he loves, celebrate those who can’t with words of encouragement.
