Pasadena definitely loves ice cream and frozen treats and there’s a new spot to explore, if you haven’t already. Swedish Scoops in Old Town Pasadena is now serving up Swedish gelato—and some other Swedish treats and café fare.
Head over to North Raymond if you find yourself in need of a creamy way to cool off. Or if you’ve been to Sweden and have some nostalgia for Scandinavian delights, then you’ll want to stop in because Swedish Scoops features not only gelato but a variety of Swedish candies, Spastries and other treats that are sourced from Sweden or Swedish bakeries in the greater Los Angeles area. But the gelato is all made in house, in the “gelato lab.”
For fans that are already familiar with Swedish gelato, pear is a perennial favorite flavor and go-to, but the gelato lab also churns other fruit flavors like berries, banana, coconut and more. The owner first opened shop in Sweden, where he created 300 different types of gelato after training in the art of gelato making in both Sweden and Italy. According to some, Swedish gelato uses less sugar than other gelato forms, which allows the flavors of the ingredients to shine through. Gelato is offered with sprinkles or whip cream and in adorable keepsake mugs for kids as well as supersized servings designed to feed a group. There is also the option of soft serve, smoothies, an “American sundae,” and many other ways to try as many flavors of gelato as you possibly can.
Beyond gelato, Swedish Scoops also offers a coffee bar, complete with hot and cold options (including teas), as well as a carefully curated selection of sandwiches. Sandwiches include bagels, ciabatta, and toast and vegetarian and carnivorous fillings ranging from a halloumi (grilled cheese) to chicken and bacon. You can also skip the bread and try a salad or a wrap. Already a local favorite is the spicy tuna bagel sandwich and accompanying salad, which includes more than just basic greens.
The clean and crisp feeling of the store helps make you feel welcome, including the ability to peer into the gelato lab, where flavors get their start before entering the display case. Friendly service and tastes of new and unfamiliar items are also making Swedish Scoops a favorite, despite only being officially opened for a few weeks.
Stop in for a bite on your way or bring the kids for a special treat. No website yet, but you can find them on Facebook.
