Boston Court Pasadena is now presenting the West Coast premiere of Her Portmanteau, written by Mfoniso Udofia and directed by Gregg T. Daniel. The play will run through June 30, 2018, starring Joyce Guy (Abasiama), Omozé Idehenre (Adiaha) and Délé Ogundrian (Iniabasi).
In Her Portmanteau, a family rifles through literal and emotional baggage. Penned by first generation Nigerian-American storyteller Mfoniso Udofia, the story chronicles the triumphs and struggles of a tenacious matriarch and her two daughters. The mother and one of her daughters have called the United States home for many years. The other daughter’s arrival from Nigeria raises heart-wrenching questions about the power of place, family bonds, and how we define our relationships over space and time.
Her Portmanteau opens with Ogundrian speaking Ibibio, one of the popular languages in Nigeria, as she arrives to a New York airport. It is a fresh experience to hear the actress speak this language, which is not translated, although the audience can deduce what is happening from context. Eventually, she switches over to English, but the family alternates between the languages throughout the performance.
The play is interesting, opening a window into a group of immigrants in the U.S. that we don’t often hear about, and into the reasons for which they came to this country, stayed, or decided to go back. The colorful stage feels homey and real, the story is emotive, and the dialogue is sprinkled with humor and with moments that bring to the forefront what theater often does: that we all have more similarities than differences, no matter where we are and where we came from.
Her Portmanteau is 1 hour, 45 minutes long, with no intermission. Tickets range $20 – $39, available at BostonCourtPasadena.org or by calling 626.683.6801. Boston Court Pasadena is located at 70 N Mentor Ave. Pasadena, CA 91106.
