Memorial Day weekend tends to be the official start of summer—whether or not the kids are officially out of school yet. For cooler regions, it means the opportunity to fire up the grill. But in Pasadena’s year round temperate climate, grilling can be done anytime. Instead of cooking at home and doing the same thing, why not try something new? There’s always a new spot or food happening so take advantage of the 3-day weekend and try something new, at least one night. You can always grill on the other days.
Hulun Beir Hot Pot & BBQ is an international chain with only a few US locations—and Pasadena is the only one on the West Coast. Try an international version of BBQ, or Mongolian hot pot and don’t forget to try all the sides and salads as well. You’ll find familiar options as well as less familiar, depending on how adventurous you’re feeling. Go with a crowd so that you can try a bit of everything from the expansive menu.
Pasadena Farmer’s Market at Victory Park takes place on Saturday mornings, making it perfect for prepping for Monday’s big day. If you’re planning a backyard grill session, it’s the perfect place to pick up all the fresh veggies you need for sides and throwing on the grill. Grill some asparagus to accompany the beef, chicken, and pork you pick up from the local ranch.
Maestro Things in a Bowl is part of LA’s bigger LA Food Bowl event. The month long event has been running throughout the month of may, with different restaurants all over the county participating. Upscale Mexican restaurant has crafted a special bowl filled with potatoes cooked in the “Heston Blumenthal potato method, this potato has edges, nooks and cracks all through out that make this glass like crust on the outside but buttery filling lurking in the inside alongside is tender salt cured cactus salad, avocado tomatillo salsa, fresno chilies, heirloom tomato and very tender octopus finished with cotija cheese”, according to Visit Pasadena.
And if you collect cookbooks, then you should check out Taste of Vroman’s, where you can not only add to your collection (or start one), but also sample some of the featured recipes including scones, chocolates, and other sweets and treats.
