Pasadena’s food scene grows regularly and it can be difficult to keep up. A couple of new spots have opened up including another ramen joint and a casual seafood boil. The popularity of ramen shows no signs of slowing down as more and more noodles are popping up all over town and Cajun seafood, with yet another of the papered trays spots appearing in our neck of the woods.
King of Ramen is a family run business that began in Spokane, Washington. Fortunately for us, the legendary noodle bowls have migrated further south, to the family’s hometown of Pasadena. King of Ramen is a perfect blend of East meets West. Trained by a Japanese Ramen maker, Stateside the noodles are made from US-based ingredients to create each steaming bowl. The ramen focused menu includes both traditional pork bone broth as well as vegetarian options. You’ll also find a selection of appetizers (including local favorite, fried pumpkin) and salads to pair with your choice of spicy or not ramen. If you need to make your bowl a little heartier, feel free with extra toppings that include not only meat and noodles but also corn and other veggies. If you don’t feel like broth, try a rice plate, piled high with anything from minced pork to vegetable curry. King of Ramen is a little pricey than some other ramen joints that have opened around town, which fits with the minimalist space.
Beer and Claw is the latest seafood spot to open. An Asian/Cajun fusion spot like you’d find in the Southern states, Beer and Claw features Cajun style dishes ranging from crabs and crawfish to po boys. But you can also find items like Cajun rice, garlic noodles, and uni pasta, which tend to be hallmarks of Asian influence in the Cajun cuisine. Be prepared to get messy peeling your own shrimp and cracking your own claws when the seafood arrives on a huge tray, ready to be enjoyed. You can add corn, potatoes and other sides to your choice of boil. And there are options for non-seafood eaters as well, including chicken tenders, fries, ribs and other meat dishes. A Cajun Margarita is essential for maximum enjoyment.
