Just when I thought I knew every great place in Old Town Pasadena, I stepped into The Cellar: A Wine Library yesterday, and was blown away. Just like that, it took over the top of my favorites’ list. I’d love to keep it all to myself, but that’s not what makes businesses thrive, so instead I’m telling you all about it. The more of us that love it, the more chances it has to remain.
The Cellar: A Wine Library is located at 26 E. Colorado Blvd., right between Lush and the We Olive and Wine Bar. There is always a person at the door, and that’s because the actual business is not at street level. You must take an elevator down to the basement, where everything becomes cork and wine boxes, and where a door, made of wine barrels, opens to welcome you.
Passed that door, there’s an entire different world. The whole room is encased in wood. Some of the walls are cube shelves that hold bottles of wine and books, the others display framed pictures of writers, painters, and musicians who have been significant throughout the times – there you’ll see Shakespeare, Vincent Van Gogh, and Beethoven.
There are wooden tables and chairs for those who want to eat some of the cheese-and-meats boards they offer, and comfortable leather couches for those who just look to relax with a bottle of wine. The wine options are out of this world, well, more like out of the whole world, letting you choose between wines from Lebanon, India, France, Argentina, Chile, and so forth and on, until arriving in North America and to our beloved Paso Robles and Sonoma areas. If you know wine, you already know that some of these bottles are expensive, but I saw many, and from various parts of the orb, starting at $45.
The books on the shelves are not there just for looks. Patrons can peruse them. I found one entitled “Spanish Literature in the Americas” that allowed me to enjoy a wonderful poem by Argentinean writer Jose Hernandez… all while sipping my delicious Pinot Noir.
The Cellar: A Wine Library is a dream place. I hope you have a chance to see it, enjoy a fine spirit, perhaps some fancy cheese, and listen to the music from the self-playing piano in the corner.
They’re not big online yet, so for more information call (626) 676 1205.
