There are a few events (some of them free) scheduled in Pasadena and Sierra Madre during April and May in celebration of the upcoming production of The Immigrant at the Sierra Madre Playhouse (SMP).
The Immigrant, written by Mark Harelik and directed at SMP by Simon Levy, depicts the true story of Haskell Harelik, a Jewish refugee who, upon his arrival in Hamilton County, Texas, in 1909, is aided by a Christian couple as he seeks to build a home and family in the United States. The narrative is appropriate for our time, as a new wave of immigrants seeks to make a home in America. The Immigrant will open April 20, 2018.
Friday, April 6, at 6:00 p.m.- Challah (or Matzoh) and Chili – A Klezmer/TexMex Listening Party at Vroman’s Bookstore at Hastings Ranch – FREE
Eat challah or matzoh and chili while listening to Klezmer and TexMex songs. Test your knowledge of Texas and shtetls (small Jewish towns or villages in Eastern Europe), learn some new things, and maybe go home with a prize. This event will be held at Vroman’s Bookstore at Hastings Ranch, 3729 E. Foothill Blvd., Pasadena, CA 91107.
Those in attendance will receive a certificate entitling them to purchase up to four discounted tickets in a single purchase at $5 off normal prices. This offer may be applied to any performance between April 29 and May 25, but must be reserved by April 18.
Thursday, May 3, at 7:00 p.m. A concert by Mostly Kosher at SMP
Mostly Kosher is a Klezmer band for the 21st Century. Klezmer is the Jewish blues (the term derives from a Yiddish word meaning “to play”) and this band fuses Klezmer with jazz, Latin, rock, hip-hop and folk. Mostly Kosher is comprised of band leader Leeav Sofer (woodwinds), violinist Janice Mautner Markham, drummer Eric Hagstrom, bassist Adam Levy, guitarist Will Brahm. This concert will take place at SMP, 87 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre, CA 91024. Tickets are $20. Make reservations at www.sierramadreplayhouse.org or (626) 355-4318.
Sunday, May 6, following the 2:30 p.m. matinee performance of The Immigrant – A talk with playwright Mark Harelik
The playwright will talk about the true family story that inspired The Immigrant. This work debuted in Denver in 1985 based on Harelik’s novel, and in the intervening 33 years, the play has been produced many times across the country. Mr. Harelik is also an actor. He was a series regular on HBO’s Getting On, and recurs on the new Hulu series Castle Rock. Mr. Harelik will be joined on stage by director Simon Levy and The Immigrant cast members. This event is free to ticket holders of this date’s performance and will also be open to the general public as space permits.
Additionally, SMP is organizing a panel discussion about Immigration moderated by Ahilan Arulanatham, a MacArthur “Genius” Fellow and Director of Advocacy at the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California. This will be a free event at SMP at a date and time still to be announced.
The Immigrant is a ticketed show. Performances will happen April 20 to May 26, 2018, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm and Sundays at 2:30 pm. There will also be a Saturday matinee at 2:30 on May 26. Tickets are $40 general / $36 Seniors (65+) / $25 Youth (22 and under). SMP is located at 87 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre, CA 91024. There is ample free parking behind the Playhouse, with several dining options just steps away. Reservations: (626) 355-4318 or online at www.sierramadreplayhouse.org
