Ever heard of a capsule wardrobe? For some reason, it’s something I’m just learning about. Yet, upon some research, I discovered that the term was coined back in the 1970s by London boutique owner Susie Faux. The purpose? To cultivate a wardrobe of timeless pieces that can be supplemented with seasonal (or more trendy) items. I love the idea. In fact, I think I’ve subconsciously done this over the years, mostly out of desperation to make getting dressed easier, and mostly because I feel more confident in classic pieces.
But, I’ve also learned over time that if I fill my wardrobe with timeless items—items that never go out of style—I not only find every-day-dressing easier, but I also remain much more content with the pieces I own from season to season. That’s a win-win for me!
So where do you start? Timeless pieces, in my mind, are your staples. Items that may seem “boring” but are ultimately the glue that hold all your trendier pieces together. These items can include straight leg jeans, a sleek blazer, a crisp white shirt, a black and white stripped tee, chic black heels, a leather purse, and some gold hoop earrings. None of these will ever go out of style. And each of them can pair easily with bold, seasonal colors and trends.
Another reason to try a capsule wardrobe is to pare your closet down. Often times we can stare at our wardrobe and think, “I have NOTHING to wear,” when actually, we have a closet practically bursting. The aim of the capsule wardrobe is to have fewer clothes but ones that are interchangeable, allowing for maximum outfit creations.
Here’s what I’m eyeing for my own capsule wardrobe:
- Nothing says staple in my wardrobe better than a pair of skinny jeans. Loving these from Madewell.
- A black and white striped shirt is as classic as they come.
- This sweater blazer from J.Crew is timeless, easy to throw on, and can mix and match with all your trendy spring tops.
- I love a faux leather skirt and this pleated one can go from day to night in a heartbeat.
- Can’t go wrong with classic kicks. Especially in white and gold.
- Cozy and classic is this sweatshirt dress. Add a trendy bold necklace and a denim jacket and you’ve taken a staple from bland to blam.
