Given that New Year’s resolutions never last long it’s no wonder that some of the most popular new places in town are bakeries. Wheat Shop has opened in Old Pasadena serving up a selection of creative croissants and other baked goods while Dots Cupcakes has new spot over in East Pasadena, Dot’s Café, that goes beyond cupcakes.
Wheat Shop derives its name from the observation that wheat is an integral part of baked goods. It certainly puts the grain to good use in a number of baked goods including creative croissants like green tea, churro, apricot and chocolate flavors. So far apricot appears to be the favorite around town, but there is also a classic version if you’re not into flavors. There are also cookies, cream puffs and other sweets and treats. If you’re feeling adventurous, check out the super shiny and very delicious looking Coffee Mirror Mouse. And if you’re in the mood for something savory, enjoy a sandwich while the bakery gets ready to roll out its cake offerings.
Dot’s Cupcakes has two locations in Pasadena and has been part of celebrations all over town since owner Hailey Kwon first opened in 2006. Now the entrepreneur has introduced Dot’s Café over in East Pasadena. Only open a short while, Dot’s Café is already earning rave reviews not only for the Instagram-perfect décor but for the selection of sweet and savory baked goods. Like her cupcakes, everything is made from scratch using the best ingredients from the savory beet and goat cheese salad to the crunchy French toast sticks. Dot’s Café is set to be a local community hangout and offers not only breakfast, lunch, and sweet treats but will also have cooking classes in the future as the space continues to fill in. Till then, check out the cupcakes and muffins as well as quinoa bowls and new riffs on favorites like fried risotto bites, fried tamale bites, and variations on salad bowls. There are also a lot of coffee and tea drinks as well as a menu for the kids that might not like the big flavors of the main menu.
Check out either spot next time you’re looking for a new treat.
