Braise & Crumble has been quietly serving up some of the best homestyle food and pies for a while now. Given that weather has finally started to cool off and the holiday season always brings a need for comforting foods, it seems the right time to pay homage to Braise & Crumble Café.
Tucked away in the Pasadena Theater District, between The Ice House and the Boston Court on Mentor Avenue, Braise & Crumble serves what used to be known as Sunday dinner. The difference is that the café is actually closed on Sundays (and Mondays), so you can only get your favorite homestyle dishes the rest of the week. It’s basically your mom’s cooking, if your mom happened to be a creative and inventive modern chef.
The small space is also a modern take on mom’s kitchen. Filled with warm woods and a homey chalkboard, painted chairs, the space is a little too chic to be completely rustic. Which is perfect for stopping in for a meal of the café’s famous fried chicken, “four bite pies,” mac n cheese, chili and other homey dishes. Although the menu is divided into proteins, vegetarians will also find that the “Veggie Beast” sandwich is plenty filling, especially paired with some of the sides. Short rib tacos, jalapeno cornbread and the fried chicken po’ boy are also popular menu items that leave fans raving and craving more. Just like mom always fills you and has you eating more, portion sizes are generous enough to share.
There is also a surprisingly large beverage selection including swanky coffee drinks and various ice teas including Thai ice tea and green and Earl Grey options.
Whatever you order as a main course, you pretty much can’t leave without indulging in dessert, whether it’s a “crack” apple pie or an “ooey gooey” brownie. The pie is the real standout, with even non-pie lovers going back for more. You can also order pies to go for your special occasions or have the café cater your next special event. Given the limited seating, it can be helpful to call ahead and order to go.
