Pasadena is about to get a swanky new Mexican restaurant. Formerly Seco in the Commons in Pasadena off of Lake is the newest location for Mercado, a growing chain of Mexican restaurants in the Los Angeles area.
South Pasadena born restauranteur Jesse Gomez and his chef/partner Jose Acevedo have opened several restaurants in Los Angeles, the most recent being a taqueria in Studio City. Gomez is reportedly familiar with that space as he worked in it as a teen back when it was a Crocodile Café. Mercado is due to open in January and will be the only location to offer both lunch and dinner menus.
Mercado features “elevated Mexican cuisine that is accessible to everyone.” In addition to elevated cuisine that typically features both vegetarian and meat options with Mexican flavors, Mercado also tends to have happy hours and a vast array of premium tequila and mescal.
When it opens, Mercado will be in the same sphere as Maestro. Maestro opened earlier this year in Old Pasadena and recently announced a changeup in chefs. Chef/owner Daniel Godinez is still affiliated with the restaurant but has gone back to Orange County, according to reports by Pasadena Weekly. The change in chefs will likely also mean some changes on the menu. Maestro had created a brunch following with its innovative takes on Mexican egg classics as well as a very well thought out mescal menu.
Another unique spot for Mexican is over at Urbano. More casual than Mercado or Maestro, Urbano featured home cooking in a modern atmosphere. Urbano offers brunch as well as lunch and dinner and happy hours and special events that encourage socialization and getting to know the people that prepare food.
Pasadena has a long and happy tradition of great Mexican for every meal from the famous breakfast burritos at Lucky Boy to every family’s favorite Mijares, also the oldest Mexican joint in the area.
