Ch-ch-chaaaanges are coming soon. As in seasonal changes. No matter how much we might want to cling to summer, fall is arriving in just a few weeks. Yes, that might mean the end to al fresco dining, long days by the pool, tans and beach waves. However, it also means welcoming in cozy scarves, pumpkin spiced lattes, nights by the fire, layers and blankets.
To me? I love fall. And mostly, I love a fall wardrobe. Living in Southern California has taught me some tricks on how to update my wardrobe for fall—even when there is no “fall.” True, autumn will arrive on the calendar; however, it won’t be truly cool until November. So what are my tricks to updating your wardrobe for fall, here in Southern California? Check ‘em out below.
- Light layers are still layers. You don’t have to wear wool and cashmere in order to have that fall layer feel. Instead? Layer up on your cottons and linens and light-weight materials. Examples: graphic tee + cozy scarf; thin long sleeves + utility vest; summer dress + three-quarter cardigan.
- It’s all about the accessories. Something about fall makes me want to wear all the bling. With summer, dainty seems right. Light and barely there. But with fall? Bring on the chunky necklaces, stackable rings, and statement earrings. Once again, this is an easy SoCal way to welcome in fall. Continue wearing your cotton tees and summer dresses. Just swap out your dainty choker necklaces with a chunky tortoise and gold loop one or oval link necklace in navy.
- Makeup makes a difference. Nothing says fall is coming more than a deep plumb lip or nail color. It’s subtle. It’s budget friendly. And makes a seasonal statement. Time to say goodbye to those bright coral pinks and say hello to deep mulberry, deep lilac, and burgundy. Also, love swapping out my bright pink, blue, and coral nail colors for bold reds, vibrant purples, and a sleek black. Pair these darker fall colors with a white tee, denim shorts, and your favorite booties and you’ll be feeling the fall vibe in no time.
- It’s in the materials. While you won’t find me in a wool sweater until winter, you will still find wool in my fall wardrobe. Look for ways to wear fall materials but in lighter ways. Such as? Hats, scarves, shoes, and purses. Wear a wool hat instead of your summer straw staple with your shorts and skirts. Swap out your cotton scarf for a chunky plaid one. Instead of metallic slides, how about leather mules? And exchange your straw tote with a velvet cross body. Once again, with just the simple change of materials, you’ll add an instant fall feel to your wardrobe.
SoCal, we’re ready for your “fall” to come.
