One of the best things about living in Pasadena is the amazing variety of food. And if it’s not right here in town, then you can probably find it somewhere in the surrounding San Gabriel Valley. And every so often we get lucky and the restaurant comes to us. Recent news reveals that historic Twohey’s diner of Alhambra is plotting to open up a more modern version of the classic diner over in the east part of Pasadena, in the spot formerly occupied by La Nueva Posada.
Twohey’s has been a loved joint since it first opened over 70 years ago. Originally located in Pasadena, Twohey’s moved to Alhambra but much of the lore of diner originates in Pasadena, including the famous Stinko Burger. Legend has it that when the pickles and onions topped burger was first served to a gentleman a nearby lady noticed the strong odor coming from his plate and gave it’s now famous name. From a small diner serving up burgers, shakes and other classic Americana-style fare, Twohey’s has greatly expanded the menu to include some gourmet takes on the basics. You’ll find a lobster BLT as well as truffle and lobster mac and cheese. These days the vastly updated menu features a tuna poke stack and lobster ceviche alongside potato skins and chicken strips. So perhaps the new foray isn’t that unexpected.
The two families that still own the place have decided to bring on a little help and expand with Travis Limoge, who has had stints as a chef all over town. The new spot will play on familiar strengths but will be more updated, according to new practices that focus on sourcing and ingredients.
Twohey’s seems to be following the tide of keeping Los Angeles area restaurants intact with some updates along the way. It will be nice to have the familiar Twohey’s neon sign at the original location while also getting to enjoy new tastes and new décor at the new space.
