Mark Peel is one of California’s most renowned chefs and has actual roots in the state as he was born and raised in Los Angeles, as a fourth generation Angeleno. He has also been chef or owner of many of L.A’s most famous restaurants including being part of owner of the new world-famous La Brea Bakery (his ex-wife is baking guru Nancy Silverton). And he was owner of Campanile, a landmark restaurant for over 20 years. These days, he’s probably best known for his appearances of food competition reality shows like Top Chef, but once upon a time he was apprenticing in the kitchens of California’s most legendary names: Alice Waters and Wolfgang Puck. Peel’s background is impressive to say the least, so it’s exciting to read that his upcoming venture is slated to make an appearance in Pasadena, with Prawn.
Prawn is Peel’s seafood-centric spot that has taken over a stall in Central Market, one of LA’s most happening food centers, thanks to recent efforts that have invigorated the historic marketplace. Unlike past Peel ventures, Prawn is a fast-casual joint that serves a variety of grain bowls, fish and chips mains, salads, and other seafood focused dishes such as stews and paella.
It looks as though Prawn is set to open in Miller Alley, in the space formerly occupied by Taqueria Esquela. So far, it doesn’t look as though an officially opening date has been announced, but if you’re shopping the area or see a show in the movie theater, you may notice some bustling going on at the corner location. The menu for the existing Prawn location looks as though it will fit nicely into this part of town, with options for vegans and those that prefer their food to be sourced from land rather than sea. In keeping with California cuisine’s love for incorporating other cultures, many dishes use Japanese rice and are cooked in broth.
Peel seems to be enjoying offering his gourmet take at reasonable prices with the current trend of having good food accessible quickly.
