Jennifer Cheng and the Cheng Family Foundation present a special collaboration between LA’s dance company DIAVOLO | Architecture in Motion®, the Dance Conservatory of Pasadena (DCP), and the Arcadia High School’s Orchesis Dance Company. The program, entitled Next Generation, will be performed on Saturday September 23.
The works will include D2R (1995, re-staged 2002) and The Space Between, performed by DIAVOLO itself. DIAVOLO uses dance to explore the relationship between the human body and its architectural environment. Creative Director Jacques Heim steers DIAVOLO’s diverse team of dancers, designers, choreographers and engineers to create visceral and awe-inspiring works that reveal how we are affected emotionally, physically, and socially by the spaces we inhabit.
D2R (1995, re-staged 2002) Descend to return represents the chaos of everyday life thru an abstract military obstacle course. This piece represents the intensity and eerie aspect of war while striving to celebrate the men and women in uniform and their remarkable heroism.
In The Space Between, the environment serves the dual purpose of being both literal and metaphorical obstacles that separate and divide us. The movements of these two simple platforms represent a study of space; the spaces we must break through, the spaces that entrap us, the intimate spaces we protect, and the spaces that continue to isolate us.
Students from the pre-professional program at DCP will perform Pillows, IBUKI Ballet, Mini door, Knockturne, Chaise, Origine, and Cubica. The DCP is dedicated to providing highest technical and artistic level of instruction to train students to pursue careers as dancers with an emphasis on offering performance opportunities. DCP prepares students for a future in the dance world.
Orchesis Dance Company will perform Cage. Orchesis is Arcadia High School’s resident dance company.
