Read for the first food news of summer:
Next to California Chutney, the Indian restaurant on Raymond, it looks like a new bakery is about ready to open. Paper covered windows with enticing images of donuts, cupcakes and other carb-laden offerings are set alongside “Wheat Shop,” likely the name of a new bakery about which even Eater has little information.
In other food news, it seems that Artisanal Brewers Collective, a restaurant group partially helmed by Tony Yarnow, of Golden Road Brewing fame, is opening up in the heart of Pasadena. ABC has purchased a massive space at 650 E. Green Street, just off Colorado. The 8,000 square foot space will be transformed into a pizza and beer joint, complete with patio and there will also be another restaurant next door. ABC has been buying properties from downtown Los Angeles to the San Fernando Valley, especially bars in need of new inspiration. Details on each space tend to be sparse until the place opens, but the large variety of properties and opportunity seem to indicate that ABC is quickly becoming one of LA’s largest restaurant groups, with joints in nearly every corner in the county. What is exciting that as a brewpub, beer could be made onsite, which is new to the Pasadena area, despite the prevalence of craft beer already on tap at many local pubs, bars and eateries.
And in the latest of unlikely food trends, it seems that the sushi burrito had arrived in South Pasadena, courtesy of Nori Sushi Wraps. Nori Sushi Wraps opened several weeks back and is already earning raves on Yelp for it’s hip tile-and-wood atmosphere that pairs with creative takes on sushi rolls. Some fans of Cheetos will be pleased with the use of the brightly colored crunchies while sushi purists may be a little shocked. But there’s something for everyone with fillings that range from fried chicken to veggies, all tightly wrapped in soy or seaweed paper.
Here’s to looking forward to more spots to try in the long hot days of summer.
