One of the leading trends in restaurants these days is to offer a quick and casual experience, paired with a more traditional dining experience. Given Pasadena’s reputation as a food destination, it’s not so surprising that we are now seeing this trend right in town. Sayuri Tachibe and husband/chef Shigefumi Tachibe of Osawa Shabu Shabu and sushi have opened a deli– Delicatessen by Osawa. The Japanese deli is located in Old Pasadena and officially opens May 22.
You may have already spotted the place as it has been soft opened for a little while and offering a grab and go fridge as well as other items that are designed for convenient eating either on site or on your way. Items are made fresh daily and the spot is open from 11am-6-pm everyday but Sunday.
Cold items include salads made with Japanese vegetables and dressings, including a marinated tofu. There is also a selection of sushi and other fish dishes. You can pair two or three deli items from the extensive menu so that you can try more options from the menu.
A couple of soups and other hot items include various croquettes, dumplings, fried chicken, katsu and other favorite items.
Curries, noodles, entrée size salads, donburi selections and more round out the menu of reasonable priced items made with locally sourced food.
Like it’s big sister restaurant, Delicatessen by Osawa has a modern aesthetic with tiles and light woods and an easy-to-read menu chalkboard.
Delicatessen by Osawa is sure to be a prime addition to the neighborhood as thus far there isn’t much in the way of convenient food that doesn’t come from a grocery store. And given that the Osawa has already been a neighborhood staple for many years, it seems that the team will have a strong knowledge on what people like and need.
Although Delicatessen by Osawa is a new addition to the neighborhood, it seems that people are already loving the easy access eatery and the quality ingredients used to prepare the items. The curries sound to be a favorite already.
