As the weather has warmed up from a surprisingly cool winter and returned to the famous sunny days SoCal is known for, Pasadena’s dining scene has also gotten a little hotter. Bone Kettle, the bone broth bistro that has been greatly anticipated, has opened up to rave reviews. We’ve also gotten a new fast food option with a Taiwanese street food import, Hot Star Chicken. Check out what to expect from these new flavors.
I’ve been a little on the fence about bone broth, it sounds a bit too healthy and trendy to be actually delicious. But after reading Eater’s recent piece on the newly opened Bone Kettle, I’m actually looking forward to stopping in for a cup of something other than ramen. You can accompany the namesake broth with a selection of noodles, veggies, and proteins as well as appetizers like chicken wings, corn fritters and even desserts. Diners report that it’s not your typical quick ramen joint and closer to a fine dining effort (as evidenced by the beautiful plating), so be prepared to shell out in the double digits for a simple bowl and close to $40 for some of the additional options. And Yelpers have been thrilled to discover that you can bring in your own bottle of wine from the neighboring Everson Royce shop for no corkage fee—at least while their alcohol license is pending, although you may want to check on the latest update when you make a reservation.

At the other end of the dining spectrum, over in East Pasadena, Taiwanese chicken joint Hot Star Chicken has opened their newest location in North America. The Taiwanese street food is served in a bag so that you can take your choice of fried chicken breast on the road, but the Pasadena location also offers sit down service, so that you can take a few moments to cut up your food on a plate. In addition to the chicken breasts, you can find other fried chicken parts such as wings and popcorn chicken, all with different flavor options. Fries and a selection of iced teas are also on the menu.
