If you have been into independent film for a while, you may remember Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal in Y Tu Mama Tambien and Amores Perros. Otherwise, you may recognize him as Maestro Rodrigo in the ongoing Amazon series entitled Mozart in the Jungle. Either way, I trust you will agree that he is quite the talented actor.
I personally love the guy. Enough that over the past weekend I traveled to El Cajon, San Diego, to the Digital Gym Cinema, to watch his latest movie – Me Estas Matando Susana (Susana, You’re Killing Me) – because the Gym plays movies that you hardly see anywhere else.
Well, the joke’s on me, but you’re the lucky one. Because I just found out that the movie will be playing at Laemmle’s Pasadena and Santa Monica starting tomorrow, March 10, through Thursday, March 16.
About “Susana” I can tell you that it is a funny film, an hour and a half long, in Spanish with English subtitles, with dialogue that switches into English often. It is based on a book entitled Ciudades Desiertas (Deserted Cities) written by Jose Agustin. Garcia Bernal is Eligio, whose wife Susana (Veronica Echegui) leaves him without warning, although she thought that leaving him would be easier than it turned out to be. Eligio follows her to the United States to try to get her back! It’s a movie that does not disappoint, but that has adult language and content, so keep the little ones at home.
If you make it to Laemmle’s Playhouse 7 (Pasadena) on Friday, March 10, for the 7:30 p.m. screening, you will have the additional opportunity to listen to the director Roberto Sneider in a Q & A afterwards.
Don’t miss the chance to see this film. It’s truly entertaining! This is a link to tickets for the shows at Laemmle’s Playhouse 7.
