Family-owned Anderson Business Technology opened in 1912 as Anderson Typewriter and has had several locations in Old Pasadena. An early advertising slogan was “We sell and service anything that writes.” The company credits its longevity with its ability to adapt with the times, moving first from manual to electric typewriters and then to computer-based communications. Its other boast? Their historic building at 120 E. Colorado has been featured in several feature films and television programs.
in operation since 1953, is housed in an important historic building that survived the wrecking ball. In 1989, the Robinson family purchased the business and took ownership of the114-year-old building at the corner of Colorado Boulevard and Raymond Avenue, the last standing commercial structure designed by renowned Pasadena architects Charles and Henry Greene. It underwent a storefront improvement project in 2010 to bring back architectural elements that had been hidden for decades.
Named for the days when it served well drinks for $ .35, The 35er Bar became a Route 66 mainstay after opening in 1963, patrons beckoned by the snazzy neon sign that still lights the night on Colorado Boulevard. The Terzo family still owns the establishment, and although it’s undergone a few renovations, it still positions itself proudly as a “dive bar,” winning that title year after year in surveys and polls of locals.
