Art + Science Café opened up in a quiet corner of Pasadena barely over a month ago but it’s always drawing attention from everyone from nearby students and locals to Eater, who discovered that the shop’s owner has brought the Chicago-based “military coffee” trend to the West Coast.
Owner Seung Lee spent time at some of the Windy City’s trendiest coffee shops, Sawada and Wormhole Coffee, before quietly opening up Art + Science Café earlier this year in the space formerly occupied by Le Muse on South Madison. The menu is limited and easy to navigate featuring a selection of coffees, hot chocolates and specialty latte drinks with avocado toast, fruit plates and sandwiches offered in the way of snacks. The military latte, for the uninitiated, is a creation from a Japanese latte artist featuring beautiful artwork and drawing it’s signature military green hue from a combination of green tea, vanilla syrup, cocoa powder and espresso. It makes for a truly beautiful photograph, especially if you’re in the habit of photo documenting everything that you consume. And not just the military latte comes with a strong artistic bent; it looks as though much of the menu includes creative foam designs, whether you prefer coffee or cocoa. Even the avocado toast is a colorful blend that makes for a lively aesthetic.
Unlike other coffee shops that tend to have early hours that aren’t conducive to a late night caffeine jolt, Art + Science is open every day of the week from 8am-10pm. There’s no official website, but there is an impressive Instagram containing all pertinent details and beautiful pictures of coffee creations at https://www.instagram.com/artandsciencecafe/.
Art + Science Café is the newest addition to Pasadena’s heavy coffee culture, which is constantly growing and expanding to include the latest methods of consuming caffeinated beverages and accompanying food bites. Two Kids Coffee opened up in South Pasadena last fall, after a successful kickstarter campaign enabled a couple of college buddies to fulfill their dreams of opening a coffee shop with a strong art and architectural scene.
