Urbano Mexican Kitchen manages to combine the deliciousness of tacos with the atmosphere of a modern restaurant. It joins wide variety of Mexican restaurants in town. Opened just last year, Urbano has somehow merged the casual joy of stopping for a taco with the trendiness of a gastropub, even hosting events that focus on Mexican craft brews. Best of all? Everything is freshly made, according to standards that will please locavores and abuelas alike.
“The way that I do my food is the way that my mother and grandmother used to cook – bringing the food from the ranch to the city,” Jose, chef/owner tells Pasadena Now Magazine.
Tortillas, salsas and even beloved carne asada are all lovingly crafted by hand. The meats used in all carnivorous dishes are marinated for eight hours before getting included into recipes. Just because there’s meat and tradition involved doesn’t mean that modern diners can’t enjoy the flavors as well. Jose refuses to cater to spice adverse palates, but there are vegetarian and gluten-free options that reflect the dishes he grew up with, like chile relleno and cactus tacos. Traditional dishes, like the pozole, offer the opportunity to leave out the chicken.
Just like a home kitchen, which allows visitors to peek inside to see the master at work, Urbano Mexican Kitchen has an open kitchen, so that you can see your dish being prepared.
“I call all the people that dine here my guests because [this restaurant] is my house,” Jose explains to the magazine.
Since first opening last year, Jose has opened his house to include menus for all hours, breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is also a weekend brunch and you can pop in for Happy Hour, which includes deals on beer, wine, margaritas, and cocktails to wash down appetizers ranging from decadent carne asada fries to a light ceviche.
Breakfast and brunch options range from flavorful burritos to traditional Mexican breakfasts like chilaquiles or a selection of omelets.
Whenever you stop in, it looks like Urbano Mexican Kitchen is ready to welcome you with a cold brew and a burst of flavor.
