With cold wet weather becoming more of a thing than usual, Southern California’s winter has officially begun. If you care to venture out, hit up some of the best places around town for comfort food, for every meal of the day.
Braise & Crumble Café is one of the rare places that manages to make comfort foods cool. Chili and cornbread, fried chicken, biscuits, pies, side dishes. There’s nothing that your grandparents wouldn’t eat, but it’s laidback and chill enough to bring your trend loving foodie friends too.
Melt it! A Grilled Cheese Co. is the reason that you no longer make your own grilled cheese. Sure, it’s an easy enough fix in your kitchen, but there are a lot more options at Melt it! and you can even find other comforting items, like mac n cheese or a bowl of soup—not just canned tomato either. There’s even salad, if you need to make it a balanced meal.
Pie n Burger is one of Pasadena’s most hallowed restaurants, with good reason. For decades, Pie N Burger has been filling the bellies of Pasadena dwellers with classic burgers and homemade pie.
Urban Plates is a newer addition to Pasadena’s growing chain dining scene on Lake. It’s a no-frills type of place serving up comfort foods like meatloaf, stews, soups, salads and side dishes that you can create a meal out of.
Roscoe’s is a Los Angeles institution, thanks to being the first to serve fried chicken with waffles. With or without waffles, the Pasadena Roscoe’s location has some of the best fried chicken in the city as well as other Southern style dishes that make you feel warm and cozy.
Bonnie B’s Smokin is another great spot for Southern comfort classics like fried chicken, candied yams and plenty of barbecue, so that you don’t have to light your backyard grill in the rain.
Harlowe’s French Dip is kind of an updated comfort food meets gastropub mashup and one of the newer spots for eats in town. Look for deviled eggs, beer cheese,Texas toast, spaghetti and meatballs, chili, and fried chicken with a gourmet take that pleases Pasadena Yelpers’ discerning palates.
Rotisserie Chicken of California has some of the juiciest chicken in town and is the type of place that is mainly locals only, because no one wants the secret spot getting too crowded. Look for various versions of rotisserie chicken with different sauces that make it a healthier comfort food option.
The Reyn is the sort of no frills place that warms you up on a cold day when you just want coffee and pancakes.
