The Los Angeles Times has named the recently opened Annapura Grill on Colorado as a great spot to find “stellar” South Indian dishes in Pasadena.
Annapura Grill is related to vegetarian Annapura in Culver City, but the Pasadena location offers meat as well as their established location’s most popular vegetarian dishes. In addition to an array of delicious dishes, the restaurant also offers cricket matches on the flatscreen televisions, which is one thing I haven’t seen from the other Indian restaurants around town. A glance at the menu and Yelp reveals that Annapura doesn’t hold back when it comes to heat, so it’s perfect for spicy food lovers.
As far as what to eat goes, the Times recommends dishes that you can’t find at many other places, like the South Indian specialties. According to the article, even Artesia’s Little India restaurants don’t universally offer selections such as Spicy vepudu chicken, Karaikudi chicken kurma, along with masala fried fish and goat pepper fry and biryanis, a vast selection of dosas, including a “four foot long” family dosa. Dosas are delicious rolled crepe-like creations and the larger size is an amazing thing to witness, but definitely something to be enjoyed with a crowd—or a large family. There are also dishes that employ eggs as a protein, some of which include chicken and are also harder to find dishes from regions of South India. If you are wondering, the menu also includes Northern Indian specialties as well, such as more familiar chicken tandoori, chicken tikka, and chicken tikka masala, with a creamy gravy. A quick look at the positive reviews on Yelp show that many people are also fans of the goat curry, which is slow-cooked in an onion tomato masala gravy.
So far, Annapura seems to be drawing fans from the Indian community as well as locals that work in nearby offices seeking new spots to enjoy lunch. With a sleek interior, open kitchen and wall mural, Annapura looks to be a welcome newcomer to Pasadena’s ever growing selection ofIndian restaurants.
