Restaurant critic Jonathan’s Gold’s annual list of 101 Best Restaurants has been released and it’s no surprise that a few of his favorites just happen to be in Pasadena.
Since it opened in Old Pasadena, a few years back, Union has been changing how the entire city envisions Italian food. Chef Bruce Kalman serves up housemade everything, from pasta to meets in a twist on modern cuisine. It’s still nearly impossible to make a reservation and hitting the top 101 list probably won’t help things out. Still, it’s worth a try getting in to whenever you’re in the mood for something hearty and satisfying.
Another famed Italian eatery made Gold’s list of favorites, Downtown L.A.’s Celestino Drago. Celestino Drago is owned by the same family of restaurateurs as Pasadena’s Celestino on South Lake, not to mention a few other higher end Italian joints around Los Angeles. Celestino tends to pop up on a lot of favorite lists and has garnered both local and national attention. It works well for both lunch and dinner and has an extensive wine list to pair with classics like lasagna, vodka penne and other pasta dishes. For nearly twenty years, Celestino has been part of Pasadena’s culinary community and participates in food and wine events as well as restaurant weeks.
Near last, but definitely not least, on the list was Lincoln. Lincoln is part of the same family as Little Flower Candy Company, which is also helmed by chef/owner Christine Moore, and Gold has been a fan since it opened last year. The great thing about Lincoln is the rotating selection of brunch items, which go far beyond basic bacon and eggs and pastries without ever venturing too far. Gold also dropped some of his other favorite breakfast and brunch spots for dining when he’s around Pasadena, including Marston’s, Pie n Burger and Europane.
It sounds like Gold is on top of things in our neck of the woods, probably as he drives through to check out his beloved noodle shops in the San Gabriel Valley.
