As a frequent recipient of invites to contribute to Kickstarter campaigns that I can’t afford to contribute to, or don’t understand because the intent isn’t super clear, I thought that it was amazing that two buds from Pasadena managed to collect enough dough to fulfill their dream of opening up a coffee shop. Two Kids Coffee is the passion-project-turned-functional-business from two kids that met in college and found out that they have a lot in common.
According to the Kickstarter lore in a nutshell, once upon a time, Two Kids were graduates of USC School of Architecture, with day jobs doing the usual post-college grind. Eventually they decided that what they really enjoyed was coffee. So they saved up and bought a bunch of equipment to make really fancy comforting coffee for the dreamed of shop. But they didn’t have any money for the actual shop. So with some clever design and a little help from their friends, they created a coffee cart that could fit their fancy coffee making stuff and be totally mobile so that they could tote it around at events and pop-ups, creating a client base before they officially opened a storefront.
The plan worked and word got around so that their Kickstarter campaign became funded well enough to snag an actual building space—prime commercial real estate right in South Pasadena. The better part of a year later, after some pop-ups in the building and some creativity in making a small, modern store out of a dated retail space, Two Kids Coffee is ready and open for business. Likely thanks to their architectural backgrounds, the two kids were able to do much of the work creating just the right look themselves, from clean woods and white finishes.
Check out Two Kids Coffee at 1504 S. Mission St, just be sure not go on a Wednesday. They’re closed on Wednesdays and tend to have slightly unusual hours in general, so check the website first and then the Facebook page, which is updated for holidays and events.
