For some people, Pasadena is still thought of as a sleepy suburb in Los Angeles. What those people don’t know is that Pasadena has come a long way and now has citified amenities like late night dining and 24-hour fast food restaurants. Mixed in are places for the culinarily adventurous, and luckily, much of Pasadena is now culinarily adventurous. In addition to the migration of favorite international spots of the surrounding San Gabriel Valley into town, Pasadena also has some places that are favorites with locals as well as food critics.
Eatery by Claud & Co Catering is tucked away in a little known part of town, but the food is so good that it speaks for itself. Chef Claud Bacchus honed his craft under renowned restaurateur Thomas Keller of The French Laundry fame. His catering company has been a favorite at parties around town Pasadena for many years, but lately the chef has stepped up his game with Bacchus’ Kitchen and Eatery. Eatery brings to town what many trendier places bring to big cities: food themes. The menu changes monthly with a single theme tying it together, whether a type of cuisine or an ingredient.
Clearman’s North Woods Inn of San Gabriel is celebrating 50 years. It’s a rare relic of a time gone by when theme restaurants could be found. The snow-topped log cabin roof can be spotted from the freeway on the way out of town and into the mountains. Always a startling sight to see snow in 100 degree weather, Clearman’s serves traditional Americana in what has become a very unique setting and the cheese bread is not to be missed.
Union has only been around for a few years, but the Italian joint is anything but your traditional blend of Italian American. Chef Bruce Kalman has been earning national acclaim for his approach to pasta and meats. It’s still a difficult spot to get into, thanks to the press creating a shortage of reservations. In true forward-thinking fashion, Union can come to you. The restaurant is joining Uber Eats; a delivery service that means you can enjoy high-end spots like Union from the comfort of your home.
These are just a few of the Pasadena area’s notable spots, but more than a few are lurking in just about every corner of town.
