Now that summer is in full swing, outdoor movie nights are everywhere. I love the idea of laying out on a blanket on a warm evening, picnicking with watermelon and fresh salads, and watching a movie under the stars. It’s as good as a summer night gets, no?
The one problem? What to wear. Recently, evenings have had a slight chill to them. Leaving night time apparel a bit of a mystery. Covering up too much feels more fall than summer. But leaving home without a sweater means shivering all night long. The solution — a balancing act of light materials, cozy knits, and dual-use accessories.
Achieve this and you can watch every outdoor movie you can find (including the list of them at One Colorado in Old Pasadena). While staying stylishly snug.
First on my list — a cozy sweater. Something that’s not too heavy (no thick wools, please) but keeps you warm when the temperatures drop. I’m loving thick cotton knits and delicate cashmeres. Or the perfect topper? A sweatshirt. Yes. A sweatshirt. These have made such a comeback in recent years, and this summer the trend continues. My favorites?
This Geometric Sweatshirt from Zara — grey with a fun geo pattern in cream. It’s swingy; it’s cozy; and it’s stylish all at the same time. Win-win-win.
Target’s Striped Open Hooded Sweatshirt in a grey and white strip is the perfect throw on over a summer dress or t-shirt. The open front and loose fit give this sweatshirt a casual cool feel, perfect for a movie-night.
But my favorite is Joie’s Annora B Sweatshirt in the prettiest soft grey ikat pattern. Light and airy, it’ll be a summer favorite for seasons to come.
Next on my list has to be pants in a light material. When the temperatures drop, the last thing you want is bare legs. I’m digging lightweight pants these days. They breathe when the weather is warm but offer cool coverage in the evenings.
My favorite? The Midland Joggers from Anthropologie. These slouchy yet fitted pants are as comfortable as pajamas. Trust me.
Or these Cross Hatch Pull On Pants from Splendid. Like your favorite pair of jeans but with a soft, pull-on vibe. Can we say, yes?
Last on my list for my movie-night wardrobe is a versatile scarf. Love the idea that you can wear this around your neck to cover up from the sun but wrap yourself in it when the sun goes down. Personally, I’m loving all of J.Crew’s and Madewell’s scarves.
Like this Striped Scarf with Fringe from J.Crew (navy and white stripes with a bit of fringe); this Embroidered Scarf with Pom-Poms from J.Crew (chambrey inspired blue with navy poms); and Madewell’s Wispstripe Square Scarf (in etherial “antique cream”, “trimmed in playful tassels”).
So, now that you’re armed with a warm summer wardrobe, movie nights can commence. Enjoy!
