A lot of our aging baby boomers and senior clients do in fact sell a larger home and move to a nearby smaller one, a condo, a retirement community, or to a less expensive geographic location with senior-friendly amenities.
But what if you don’t want to move, but “age in place”?
We read an interesting piece by Glenn Ruffenach, a retired Wall Street Journal reporter. He pointed to three resources, the first being a study named “Housing America’s Older Adults…” Go to www.jchs.harvard.edu and highlight Research.
The study identifies five features that make for safer and more accessible homes: 1] no-step entries, 2] single floor living space, 3] electrical switches and outlets accessible from any height, 4] extra-wide hallways and doors, and 5] lever-style door and faucet handles. 90% of our homes have at least one of these features, but only 57% have more than one.
The National Association of Home Builders published an “Aging in Place Remodeling Checklist.” You can get it by going to www.nahb.org and search for “aging in place.” There are over one hundred suggestions that can help folks over fifty live “safely, independently and comfortably.”
Another report, this one by the American Association of Retired People (AARP) is called “HomeFit Guide.” This is at www.aarp.org and search for “HomeFit. It’s filled with diagrams and explanations for creating a “lifelong home”, one “suitable for anyone…”
All are worthwhile reading whether you are a boomer or senior, or have loved ones who will find these links worthwhile reading and doing.
