The outlying San Gabriel Valley seems to be expanding into Pasadena these days, which means it’s closer than ever to get some Asian baked goods. The newest outpost in the neighborhood is the Oh My Pan Bakery & Tea on Arroyo Parkway, which has another popular spot in San Gabriel.
Oh My Pan is a bakery and boba shop that offers adorable and creative desserts that seem to blend Eastern and Western tastes and presentations. Many of the treats are available to go, but the popular Honey Toasts, which appear to be large chunks of sweet bread cubed and toasted on each side then topped with custards, creams, fruits and other toppings are only available to be eaten on-site—likely because of soggy toast resulting from melting toppings.
The San Gabriel location got a shout-out in the LA Times for having the best Asian sweet bun. According to the blurb, “At this bustling San Gabriel bakery often described as a cross between Half & Half Tea House (the uber-popular SGV boba shop) and 85C (the pioneering Taiwanese purveyor of Eurasian breads), the brick toast piled high with sticky fruit, and the Dorito-topped squid ink bread may cause heads to turn, but its simple taro buttercream bun is a don’t-miss. $1.40.”
Over on Yelp, it seems that the strawberry brick toast is definitely something to try, but the artful dessert comes with a waiting period, as the treat is toasted and then careful stacked.
Other favorite items are the Asian teas, tea drinks and boba. A frosted milk drink with boba sounds like a delightfully sweet way to cool down on a hot afternoon. Given the very warm weather of late, the it would seem that the items to try would be the incredible variety of teas and cold drinks, but the menu promises that much of the fruity tea menu can be made hot as well.
Along with sweet breads, pastries, cakes and confections, Oh My Pan also has savory snacks. Breads are topped with meats and veggies, and there are also a couple of vegan options as well.
