It seems like Old Pasadena often gets the buzziest restaurants. Yet over on Lake, Eater reports that a couple of new places have opened/will be opening, which are definitely worth a look.
Duke Bakery Opens on South Lake
Duke Bakery originates in Asia and opened Stateside in the San Gabriel Valley. The bakery now has shops in Costa Mesa and Glendale and most recently opened up on South Lake Avenue. The shop specializes in combining Asian and European influences into baked products that range in texture, thanks to different fermentation formulas for different items. Along with a broad selection of breads and cakes, you can also find coffee drinks to wash it down.
Bru Grill Taking Over Trattoria Neaopolis Space
Orange County’s Bru Grill & Market is reportedly taking over the former Trattoria Neaopolis space on Lake. A casual spot, Bru Grill has a huge space in the OC and will likely have a similar aesthetic once it opens. A vast menu filled with burgers, pizzas and steaks is accompanied by a an even bigger selection of craft beer, but no word on whether or not the new location will follow suit. The original Bru Grill has only been opened a few years, but they already have plans to expand, first to Pasadena and possibly elsewhere as well.
Opening Elsewhere Around Town
CaliBurger is reportedly an In-N-Out knockoff, even an incurring a lawsuit from the classically California burger chain for borrowing the palm-tree theme. CaliBurger hails from Santa Monica and has opened locations internationally, including China. The next spot is in the Paseo Colorado on Green Street. Get a burger wrapped in paper and make it a Cali-double if you’re hungry, served alongside Cali-style fries (which are known as animal-style elsewhere)—and there’s a couple of chicken sandwiches on the menu as well. The Pasadena spot is set to open up in June. One difference between the two California burger joints is that while In-N-Out does things the old-fashioned way, making customers wait for their food after ordering it from a human server, CaliBurger uses a digital kiosk and is now taking reservations via app for the opening.
