The Norton Simon Museum is planning a special summer solstice event designed to bring the Museum’s experience out of the galleries and into its beloved sculpture garden.
The annual garden party will be held in the Museum’s lovely Sculpture Garden with live music and a number of activities, including making drawing supplies accessible so that you can sketch en plein air (very fancy way to say “outdoors”). You’ll also be able to discover the art of tea blending and make a garden-inspired satchel of tea, and sip champagne while watching the sunset. Food and beverages will be available for purchase in the Garden Café.
This third annual garden party will be held on Saturday, June 25, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. This is a family event, so your children are welcome. All of the fun will be free with admission price, which is $12 for adults, $9 for seniors, and free for museum members, students with I.D. and everyone 18 and under.
You may arrive early and enjoy the various Museum exhibits prior to the outdoor event. You could, for example, arrive before 1 p.m. when a tour will meet at the entrance gallery and an educator will lead “Duchamp to Pop,” which explains how Marcel Duchamp’s irreverent use of readymade objects as art paved the way for other art movements of the 20th century, including Pop Art, and influenced the likes of Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, and George Herms. Or you could catch the introductory film “The Art of Norton Simon,” a 30-minute documentary narrated by Gregory Peck that will play at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and that recounts Norton Simon’s interest in art and his successes in business.
