Eater reports that Picnik is out and True Food Kitchen is in down at the far reaches of Old Pasadena. True Food Kitchen is a nationwide chain with origins in Virginia and West Coast outlets in El Segundo. Now, Pasadena is set to be the newest location with an anticipated summer opening.
True Food Kitchen is a health conscious chain that is expanding not only in Southern California, but also all over the United States. The chain features vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free dishes and prepares them in a way that not just hardcore health nuts will enjoy. Instead, the up and coming chain endeavors to combine healthy eating with current food trends.
Menu options follow an anti-inflammatory diet food pyramid plan and changes seasonally with produce availability. Fish is sourced sustainably and the steak is grass-fed. You’ll find familiar items like pizza and lasagna with healthier twists, like flaxseed dough and turkey meat.
When True Food Kitchen opens, it will join an ongoing trend of healthy chains coming to town:
Jamba Juice in Old Pasadena has been playing with a concept store, which is currently closed for remodeling, with a more plant-focused menu in addition to smoothies and juices.
SunLife Organics opened in April in the Commons courtyard on South Lake Avenue. The upscale shop serves a selection of wellness-focused juices, superfood shakes and bowls that have healthy-sounding ingredients such as cacao, chia seeds, açai, maca, hemp milk, goji berries and MCT oil. The mini-chain has other Southern California shops, closer to the beach and originated in Malibu. In addition to the creations that get whipped up behind the counter, you can also find packaged meals like salads and vegan lentil loaf or grab n’ go snacks such as paleo granola, raw sweets, juice and Kombucha and hot meals are likely on the way, as they are available at other locations. The Pasadena spot also features locally made FroYo. Despite being health focused, many concoctions feature fruit to make health food more palatable to newbies.
And of course, there’s all the salad spots, juice bars and organic places to explore as well.
