Paul Martin’s American Experience recently opened its 10th restaurant on Lake Avenue and it’s already become one of the hottest happy hours in town.
For the uninitiated, Paul Martin’s is a chain from restaurateur Paul Fleming, who is also behind the “P.F.” in P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, and the “Fleming” in Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar and had a hand in Ruth’s Chris as well. For this steakhouse interpretation, Paul Martin’s focuses on fresh seasonal ingredients, sustainable seafood, free range poultry and beef, and making everything from cocktails to dressings and breads fresh from scratch.
The attention to detail in a chain steakhouse is very much appreciated in a town where more and more people care about not only what they eat, but also where it comes from. Bartenders and waiters are more than happy to go into detail about the food—as long as they’re not too busy. And at happy hour, Paul Martin’s is always busy.
The happy hour menu is where Paul Martin’s really stands out from other similar restaurants. From 3pm-7pm daily, happy hour is long enough that you can actually make it after work. Whether or not you’ll be able to find a place to sit in the bar area, which also includes communal dining tables, is another story.
If you do manage to snag a spot, then you’re in for a deal. Paul Martin’s happy hour portions aren’t skimpy and they are very well-priced. Plus, there are more than just a couple of options on the menu and you get more than just a $1 or $2 off the drinks. There’s $5 smoked wings (totally worth it) and a range of cocktails and wines at either $5 or $9. If you’re looking for a full meal, go for the entrees, which include a choice of burger or fish n chips. Or just share a bunch of the appetizers, also priced at $5 or $9 and includes not only the wings, but also tacos, ribs, lettuce cups, skewers and more.
Outside of happy hour, Paul Martin’s tends to blend in with the crowd of other steakhouses, with a vast menu of steaks, seafood, chicken and salads. The other unique offer is that each day has different specials, like a prix fixe brunch on weekends, a Sunday prime rib dinner and fried chicken on Tuesdays.
Generous portions and generous pours make Paul Martin’s a popular place to head, happy hour or not.
