One of the best things to see with your family this holiday season is the Panto production, entitled “Peter Pan and Tinker Bell – A Pirates Christmas,” now at the Pasadena Playhouse.
Panto is a musical show based on a fairy tale story that gets modernized with witty dialogue and well known pop songs. In this case, “A Pirates Christmas” brings to mind the Peter Pan story we all know, in the midst of songs like Bruno Mars’s “Uptown Funk” and Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off.” Panto is interactive, encouraging the young in attendance to sing, “boo,” and cheer, while remaining clever enough to get plenty of laughs from the adults in the audience.
If your family has watched TV shows like “Girl Meets World” and “Seinfeld,” or movies like “Pitch Perfect 2” and “The Lovely Bones,” the actors will be one more reason to attend this Panto at the Playhouse. Sabrina Carpenter, Corey Fogelmanis, and August Maturo, of “Girl Meets World” are Wendy, John, and Michael respectively, while John O’Hurley, who most know as Mr. Peterman in “Seinfeld,” is Captain Hook/Mr. Darling. Nikki SooHoo of “The Lovely Bones” is Tiger Lily, and Chrissie Fit of “Pitch Perfect 2” makes for an adorable Tinker Bell. Along with them is Parvesh Cheena of “Outsourced,” as well as a team of dancers incredibly talented for their young years.
The stage is festive and colorful, with impressive projections and lighting that turn the show into a feast for the eyes. When Peter Pan must fly, he actually does! and when Tinker Bell must speak, she does it well, sometimes in Spanish!
Music is live and awesome by The Michael Orland Band, playing songs that include “In the Navy,” “Santa Clause in Coming to Town,” and “The Voice Within.”
This is a show that your kids will love, and an experience that can start an hour before the performance at the theater’s courtyard, where you can enjoy a “Winter Wonderland” that will include holiday crafts and photo opportunities. At the end of the show, “snow” will fall on the courtyard, and that will make everybody in your family happy.
Tickets range from $25 to $140. A Golden Ticket is available as an add-on to any child’s ticket (4 to 12 years old) for $65, which will let your child onstage for a sing-along experience and give him or her a gift bag of special surprises and a Peter Pan collectible poster. Tickets are available by calling the Pasadena Playhouse at (626) 356-7529 or online at PasadenaPlayhouse.org.
Peter Pan and Tinker Bell – A Pirates Christmas will perform through Jan. 3, 2016. The Pasadena Playhouse is located at 39 South El Molina Avenue in Pasadena, 91101.
