‘Tis the season for splurging and indulging. To my food-filled mind, that means saving some of your shopping money for a sushi splurge. Sugarfish, the kind-of sushi chain that has popped up all over Los Angeles has recently opened a location on South Lake, right in the shopping area, making it the perfect stop for a sushi snack, or meal, while you do your gift getting.
Sugarfish’s claim to fame are the omakase options. Rather than a super-luxe, only-at-the-counter extravaganza, there are actually three different options, also available at the tables. Known as “Trust Me,” diners have the option to choose between three price points with varying levels of selections:
- Trust Me Lite
- Trust Me
- The Nozawa (which includes a daily special)
Known for providing quality over quantity, the portion sizes at Sugarfish tend to be perfectly bite sized, so if you’re hungry, or a big sushi eater, you may want to go for a larger Trust Me. Or augment with an appetizer or two to share.
Sugarfish doesn’t take reservations, so plan to wait in line, or bring a buddy to wait in line for you, as you peruse the shops that fill the area.
In keeping with its reputation for celebrity spotting and impeccable sushi, it should be noted that although it’s been open for somewhere around a month, it’s already racking up fans and accolades on Yelp. Although not technically a chain, Sugarfish has opened up numerous locations, so they know what they’re doing. Even service is reportedly already up to par, which is a common issue at most newly opened restaurants. The chain-like atmosphere does have one good thing: consistency, which can be hard to find even at the best sushi places. If you like trying crazy new dishes, Sugarfish may not be the first stop on your list. However, the usual suspects are always top notch, including the famous toro hand roll and blue crab hand roll in crispy seaweed sheets, which are available on the Trust Me menus. And the best part is the warm rice and cold fish, just the way sushi is supposed to be.
The new Sugarfish is over in The Commons on South Lake, near the Lemonade, and a bunch of the stores and shops that you will likely be heading over for holiday shopping.
