Halloween is coming, readers! I can’t believe it. And what I also can’t believe is that I’m actually hosting a Halloween party. That’s right. Someone who’s never been one to dress up or celebrate the holiday (except by eating more candy than I should), is gathering friends for some spooktacular food, games, prizes, and of course—costumes.
So the big question is, what will I be? Thankfully, I discovered a costume shop right here in Pasadena—StarMarkers Costumes. Located on N. Lake Ave., this shop, however, is more than a costume shop—“[i]t’s a place where [y]our dreams come to [life]!” Their list is extensive. Everything from individual outfits—like a princess, Elvis, Tiger, elephant, rag doll, Zorro, Batman, genie, Santa Claus—to duo sets, including a 50’s couple, butler and maid, Dora and Diego, even Hans Solo and Princess Lea—fill their inventory.
With such a long list, it’s no surprise that the owner and creator of StarMakers Costumes and Vintage was a lover of theater and costumes—she collected enough to fill 4,000 square feet of space, after all. Her name? Ms. Beverly Bishop. Before opening her store, however, Ms. Beverly directed, produced, and costumed all the productions at her own theater company. Along with being the costume designer at the Pasadena Playhouse and the Sierra Madre Playhouse. (Whew—quite the resume!)
In 2008, Ms. Beverly passed away, leaving her legacy to Leisel “Q” Quamie, a friend and apprentice of the owner. Today, the costume store continues to please its customers. StarMakers was voted Best Costume Shop in 2011.
So, interested in renting or buying costumes this Halloween? Then stop by StarMakers Costume and Vintage. Whether you’re two years old or 102, they’ve got the costume for you! Wish me luck…
